Cali-Sober & Psychedelics--Why This Trend Might Be Riskier Than You Think

The idea of being “California sober” has gained attention in recovery circles—but is it truly sobriety? In a recent podcast, Steven T. Ginsburg, founder of Restore Detox Centers, shared why he believes the concept is misleading and even dangerous.
“California sober” typically means avoiding “hard drugs” while still using marijuana, while “psychedelic sobriety” substitutes cannabis with LSD or psilocybin. Ginsburg argues both approaches ignore how addiction works: any mind-altering substance can trigger cravings and lead back to relapse. As he puts it, “every alcoholic is an addict and every addict is an alcoholic”—the disease doesn’t discriminate by substance.
Through analogies like Russian roulette, diabetes mismanagement, and even his daughter’s question about whether he could ever safely drink again, Ginsburg underscores a central point: complete abstinence offers the highest chance of lasting recovery. Each compromise, he warns, lowers the odds of success.
Still, his message isn’t one of judgment. Ginsburg stresses that recovery communities must remain compassionate and open to anyone seeking help. The bottom line: sobriety isn’t about redefining terms—it’s about protecting your life and giving yourself the best chance to heal.
