Sponsorship is one of the most practical tools in 12-step recovery. A sponsor is more than a supportive friend—they’re someone with personal experience working the 12 Steps who provides guidance, accountability, and support.
Finding a sponsor usually happens naturally through AA, NA, and other 12-step meetings. Look for someone whose recovery you respect and whose actions match their words—someone you can genuinely say you “want what they’ve got.”
A sponsor provides structure through regular communication and step work, while also being someone to call when cravings, stress, or isolation hit. That early connection can help interrupt relapse before it happens.
Sponsorship is ultimately about connection, accountability, and action. If a sponsor isn’t the right fit, it’s okay to find someone else. And when you’ve worked the Steps yourself, sponsorship can become an opportunity to give back and help someone else find recovery.
